Detroit rapper overcomes personal loss to recreate hip-hop career
DETROIT, MI – After the summer of 2016, OG Blizz faced one of those defining moments that every artists faces.
He’d already released two mixtapes to modest success, and was prepared to take his music to the next level. As a kid coming out of the streets of Detroit, Michigan, he was familiar with all of the local artists and their definitive sounds. He had worked on creating his own unique sound, and he knew his third project would be one to really put him on the map.
And then a relationship issue resulted in the complete destruction of all of his recording equipment – thousands of dollars worth of music-making magic was destroyed, just like that. The experience created a downhill spiral. He stopped making music out of frustration and was on the verge of completely giving up.
But in the early summer of 2017 he had his second son, and the new joy in his life inspired him to return to music. Over the course of the summer he has worked hard on putting new music together, and some of his old motivation returned to him. On Sept. 28 he’ll be ready to release his newest mixtape, “Vision.”
“It’s like my version of my vision mixed with reality,” he said of the project. “It’s kind of a vision of where I see myself in a couple of years, mixed in with a little reality. My vision is that I would have a pretty nice fan base where I can make money off of my music. The whole idea comes from the first song I made when I returned to making music, and it was so good that I knew then and there that I was going to make another mixtape and I saw a vision for the future. This project is that vision starting to turn into a reality.”
The first single from the album is called “Profit.” He describes it as a song with a vibe that can pretty much fit any situation – from the laid-back, chill environment to the hype, party environment. It’s also a song that showcases his unique sound and style, something that he said is similar to other artists from Detroit but at the same time different and individual.
“Where I’m from, everybody has a specific sound,” he said. “I know when I hear a Detroit artist. I consider myself unique with my own flow. I pick and choose my own beats, and they usually aren’t Detroit beats. I’m really selective and make sure it fits my style. I also come from the street life and rap about the street life, even though I haven’t been there for a minute. But I want people to know I’m that real type of guy. When they hear my music I want them to know that I’ve been through that I that I actually did those things. I don’t want to be no fraud. I want them to be able to feel it and relate to it, instead of saying I’m just rapping to get attention.”
Before “Vision” hits digital distribution sites at the end of September, OG Blizz encourages fans to keep an eye out for a second single called “Ghost Town,” which should drop later this month. To listen to OG Blizz’s music, or to follow him on social media, please visit the following links:
